Might be Linux rather than Windows or HP-UX.

During my recent load of Oracle 10gR2 on Linux (on x86_64) I found many notes about install on Linux on Itanium.

Interestingly we’ve found things from Oracle that work on PA-RISC for HP-UX but NOT on Itanium for HP-UX,

On page 15, point 94 it mentions Next major or minor release following NBU 6.5 Master / Media Servers will no longer be supported on Intel Itanium IA-64 hardware.

Now, is this telling me that I cannot goto 6.5 now? Because we have loads of these boxes in place, that run on 5.1, and are San Media Servers.

NBU 6.5 is not a major version - it's considered by Symantec to be a minor version.  Besides, it's saying that that 6.6 or 7.0 (whichever comes first) won't support IA-64 - it doesn't say that from your quote anything about it not being supporting on 6.5.  It also only applies to Windows and Linux - the note definitely does not apply to HP-UX on IA64.

You sure you're running IA64 and not x64?  They're drastically different architectures...  You'd be the first person I've heard of that's running Windows on IA64...

Also, to clarify the position on VMWARE, the document refers to NetBackup servers not supported. I take it, this means SAN and Media Servers, as well as Masters?

That is correct - media servers are not supported.   My interpretation is that anything that requires direct access to the tape drive hardware will not be supported.  This is the same as Solaris 10 zones - they can't be media servers either.  Simply put, if you have to install the server package instead of the client package, it isn't supported in a virtual machine.
