Sounds like local disk is faster and/or on a different controller/bus,
while the DSSU is possibly slower disk, and on the same controller/bus
as your tape drives?

How many volumes are on the same RAIDset as the DSSU? Are you doing
multiple de-stages from multiple DSSUs?
