All but 1 of the media servers are on the SAN and back only themselves
up. So the master/media and another media server take in all the
network client backups. The other 30 or so media servers back up their
large databases. Generally if a system is over 200GB for a database we
put it on the SAN and let it back itself up. That's not a hard rule but
there you go.

What I'm primarily worried about is that every backup has a
bprd/bpsched/bpdbm process on the master, whether it is a client or not
(or it appears that way). The netbackup binaries appear to be 32-bit
and thus I suppose limited by shared memory (I just had bpsched die two
days ago because it couldn't allocate memory - though the master has 6GB
and it is never approached using it all). So with all those processes
eating shared memory, I'm bumping up against that 1750MB limit.

Why do you have some many media servers? How are you determining the
need? What are your reporting tools saying for capacity?

My current environment is one master server, 32 media servers and 400+
clients. With an acquisition and a new business coming online we could
be increasing our server count by 50%. I've heard Veritas technical
support comment that I'm on the verge of exceeding the numbers of media
servers per master that they recommend.
=20
I'm campaigning for another master for many reasons, but primarily so I
do not overload the current master and primary network media server.
Does anyone have any actual documentation or personal experience to
suggest increasing media servers beyond 30 or so per master is not a
good idea? I realize there are large shops out there that exceed those
numbers but the resources available on my end are getting more stressed
every month.

Thanks,

G.
