I would be careful about about the assumption that 4 LTO streams will
fit on a gig-e.  I have seen sustained rates of 26+ MB/sec in a
Gig-e/SAN environment, and there is significant overhead with IP that is
not present with SCSI/FC.

Keep in mind that your PCI bus could also become a bottleneck. If you
plan to move all that SCSI and network traffic though a single, 32-bit
PCI bus, you will probably saturate it. Hopefully you have a 64-bit
PCI bus and cards or multiple PCI busses . (or other HW architecture
that supports this type of throughput)

LTO has a native speed of 15 MB/sec. I've never seen ours burst past 25
MB/sec. So your Gigabit ethernet should be able to drive all four
drives at max speed.

LVD SCSI is only good for 80MB/sec - I'd recommend two busses with two
tape drives each.=20

I'm thinking of getting a StorageTek L40 library with 4 LVD LTO1 tape=20
drives.=20

We don't run a SAN. We do network backups. Our backbone is a 1GB fiber.=20

Can the 1GB fiber master server drive the 4 LTO1 drives at full speed?=20
What has your experience been?=20

Thanks,=20
