It might be worth checking your network bandwidth.

We had appalling performance running jnbSA on a unix master server and
displaying back to an Ultra 5 workstation (even with the max memory
settings). 

However, our network link to the server was only 10mbps half-duplex.
When our workstation to server network link was upgraded to 100mbps full
duplex there was a dramatic improvement. The GUI is now almost close to
acceptable.
