Randomly shuffling tapes like this is sometimes a sign that the Netbackup
has the wrong device driver listed for the particular drive. This usually
becomes more of an issue if you are using SAN or a fibre to SCSI bridge. But
tape drives 1 (/dev/rmt1) and 2 (/dev/rmt/2) somehow get configured with the
wrong robot slot (drive 1 and two get their positions switched when you mark
which drive is in which position in the robot) or you list /dev/rmt2 as the
driver for drive 1 and /dev/rmt1 as the driver for drive 2. Somewhere there
*may* be a misconfiguration here making it impossible for Netbackup to open
the tape once its mounted. This is even easier to get wrong with a netapp,
since its harder to test the drives. ;)

All I can tell you is I worked temporarily for a government site that was
looking at (evaluating) NetBackup in February of 2001 because of it's
supossed NDMP capabilities and we experienced similar problems. We were also
not encouraged by Veritas assistance on this one however the NetApp tech
support was pretty good. Since NDMP was the driving force behind acquiring a
backup product, we did NOT choose NetBackup.

Thanks ahead of time for reading my email.

Recently we upgraded a small backup farm to NB Data Center 4.5 backing
up NetApp filers running 6.1.2 and 6.1.3. We have since seen some very
bizarre behavior while doing NDMP backups. I'm curious if anyone else
runs a similar environment and if so have you had any issues?

The main problems we seem to have is that backups randomly just stop and
the filer just starts mounting media in a random cycle. Or backups won't
start at all, the filer just cycles through all the available media and
then the backup fails because the backup window closes.

I have opened a case with Veritas, but have been very discouraged with
the response.

Cheers,
