Sounds very similar to our setup here.  Took me quite a while to get
vopie working.  The added complication in our environment is our
machines have a second NIC for backup traffice, but the vopie keys
would be created for the primary NIC, and of course backups would fail
with authentication problems.

What we do is the following:
1) bpauthsync -vopie -servers -clients client.backup.net.sfu.ca
2) add client name to methods_allow.txt on server
3) bpauthsync to push out the new methods_allow.txt to the client
4) add a line to names_allow.txt on the client for our server
 backupserver : 1.2.3.4 # 1.2.3.4 is the ip address of the 2nd NIC
