Hello,
Have you compared the Bios settings for the HBA that works fine with the
Emulex ?

Re: [Networker] SCSI ID changing after rebooting the server

Hi,

That's what i was always looking for. I've never seen a real reason behind
a fix scsi id in the control port configuration.

The strange thing on this issue is, that we have several smaller
configurations with same san switches and librarys but different hba
vendors.
I've only seen this effect in a configuration with emulex hbas. The server
OS and firmware of all other components is the same.
May be just an accident.

I will also have a look at the firmware of the used drives, the effort on
the server wouldn'nt be necessary, if there a chance to set up a binding
on the drive itself.

Hi

NetWorker for Linux V7.4 SP2 supports the optional use of the
persistently-named symbolic names created automatically by udev in several
popular Linux distributions. Here's an excerpt from the NetWorker V7.4
SP2 Release Notes (available at http://powerlink.emc.com in the "Home >
Support > Technical Documentation and Advisories > Software ~ J-O ~
Documentation > NetWorker > NetWorker for Linux > 7.4 & Service Packs"
section):

"New media library attribute and addition to the device configuration
wizard

A new attribute, Use Persistent Names, has been added to the General tab
of the
Storage Node resource for NetWorker release 7.4 Service Pack 2. When this
attribute is selected, configuration of a tape library (by using
autoconfiguration
from NMC) on a Linux host attempts to use the symbolic name for media
library
control ports and devices controlled by udev on Linux. When using the
device
configuration wizard, you can also select this option during
autoconfiguration of
devices."

Note that this feature is available ONLY for NetWorker for Linux storage
nodes.

This feature is also available as a patch for NetWorker V7.4 SP1, at
ftp://ftp.legato.com/pub/NetWorker/Updates/LGTsc10889/.  The README file
in this directory documents the location and format of the
persistently-named symbolic links supported by NetWorker:

"Device name formats

The NetWorker software can identify the following Linux device name
formats:

* /dev/nst* and /dev/sg*
* /dev/tape/by-id/<tape-identifier-string>-nst
* /dev/tape/by-id/<changer-identifier-string>-generic
* /dev/tape/by-id/scsi-<changer-identifier-string>
* /dev/generic/by-id/<changer-identifier-string>-generic
* /dev/generic/by-id/scsi-<changer-identifier-string>"

I had the same issue on Linux (SLES 9 SP3) with NetWorker 7.3.
The problem is that the scsi controlport in the nsr jukebox has to be
set to a scsi id and not a to device name.
Therefore persistent naming/binding does not solve this problem, because
you're only able to set up persistent device names
and not the uniq scsi id, bus - target - lun.
Honestly I didn't solve the problem on itself, I've written a script
that configures the controlport attribute according to the active id of
the autochanger. Additionaly it is necessary to setup persistent
naming/bindung for your devices. This works but I'm not very happy with
it...

I would be very interested in some hints or meanings about this issue!

Cheers

Try to use persistent binding for your HBA.
This errors happened mostly on Windows

We have a sun v480 server running legato networker backup and whenever
we reboot the server the scsi dev changes from [email protected] to
[email protected]. this started a month back when the server started
rebooting randomly. The scsi dev is seen when we issue the inquire
command from legato. It has been working fine from past 3 years until
the recent abnormal reboots. If we run EMCGrab on the host it sets the
scsidev back to [email protected].
