Some remarks about the compression:

You should use the standard devices. LTO-drives are very intelligent
when storing the data. In default configuration (i guess it is the "cbn"
device type, i.e. with compression tunred on) the tape drive compresses
the data.

If the compressed data is smaller than the uncompressed one it will be
stored in compressed format (note here: the networker compression is
not as strong at the drives one; so in most cases it can compress
the data a little bit). If the compressed data is larger than the
uncompressed one the drive stores the uncomressed data.
