Having * like that wont match any files with dots at the front... And
I'm pretty sure having a space is needed.
This backs up absolutely nothing:
+skip: .
This backs up almost nothing but does backup the .nsr file - which is
good if you were to do a bare-metal restore of a whole server:
+skip: *
So I think your * is good, so long as all your data isnt in some file
that begins with a .

directory from getting backed up on Unix do I create a .nsr file with
this syntax?

I had that file in there but the backup said it backed up 4 files
in that directory. Maybe it backs up the .nsr file and lost+found?
