Hello,
The real question is are you prepared to allow one of your large client
after enabling it as storagenode to do additional backup\clone load,
generally associated with Storage Node server ?
Depending on your enviroment using Dedicated Storage node for large client
is appropirate, you might want to consider additional non-dedicated
storage node to reduce backup server workload if that is a cocern.Look at
your backup window, existing backup server performance, bottlenecks and
that would help you decide.
There may be additional tuning capability within your environment i.e
additional NIC ports on the backup server, enabling GB\Jumbo Frames etc
before additional sn are required.
Other then licensing and hardware purchases there in no real concerns for
adding additional non dedicated sn where appropriate.
FYI: My environment contains, I Master server ( Quad core-DELL
PE6850-W3k-64 bit), two additional PE2950 as non dedicated sn and several
additional dedicated sn along with VTL , ever since i started using
additional sn we have had quite a imporvemt overall in the backups,
currently i backup apx 200 Windows only clients.
