Perfectly feasable, setup is straightforward - shouldn't be a cause for
excitement.

Sample scenario - Solaris backup server, NetApp filer, Library
(anybody's - we use IBM and StorageTek but should work with any),
Brocade switches (again, any switch should work).
Add zones to your SAN fabric so that NetApp can see the drives you want
it to see (don't let NetApp see the robotics if it isn't going to
control the library, it gets a tad upset), another zone so that the
backup server can see its drives. Connect drives, backup server and
NetApp to SAN fabric. On the NetApp do sysconfig -t this will list tape
drives, will also give switch and port identification so you know the
exact match between drive name and physical drive.
Do an inquire on backup server to confirm drives, etc. then jbconfig.
As an aid, when doing jbconfig, I find it useful to create a spreadsheet
with the physical drives down one side and the various hosts across the
top, enter the relevant device name for each physical drive/host
combination.
During the jbconfig you will also have to enter the userid and password
for the NDMP sessions (latest NetApp will allow a dedicated NDMP id with
a system generated password)

Keep NDMP tapes in a separate pool and there you have it, it works
really well.

With the introduction of copper Gigabit Ethernet and the cheap cost of
NICs, we've found it faster to team NICs and send the data over the
network using the 7.2 feature that allows NDMP data to be written to
non-NDMP media, we backup to disk and then treat the data as any other
backup data (clone for offsite, replicate, stage or whatever else we
want to do with it).

Bob

Hi,

Although the V7.3 docs contain the following:
>
>Drives can be shared between NDMP nodes in a SAN environment.
>Ensure, however, that the NDMP nodes are homogeneous.
>
I'm still looking for sharing a SAN-attached tape drive between "normal"
client backups and NDMP backups taken from NetApps.

Feasible at all?
Anybody has tested this and is willing to share some experiences?

Thanks a lot -sg-
