No, my AX100 is connected to one Qlogic adapter on the backup server.
My drive config on the AX100 is Raid5, and the unit is sharred with anoter
server as well.

I just remebered an important issue about PE2850, and a lot of other Dell
servers (I have >100 units), the builtin NIC is only 32 bit, and this might
be the biottleneck. I is my experience that a 1 GB, 32 bit NIC would not
perform much higher than approx. 15 MB/sec.
I would disable the internal NIC and buy an Intel MT1000 (or the dual
version), but you might have a problem as the server itself only have 3
slots !
But if you have an unused slot, it is worth to try a 64 bit NIC.
I am sorry that I cannot be of any help with your Linux config, I am
proberly the newest newbie in the Linux world :-)

forgot to ask. Are you using the PowerPath devices?

I do not know the exact source of your problem, but i could expect it had
something to do with network, maybe the old fixed/auto problem. I have a
DELL/EMC AX100, the SAN version with 12 * 300 GB drives, and my backupserver
is a DELL PE1600SC (cheap with fast bus), running Win2K SP4, Networker 7.12,
and I often see transferrates og 20, 25 or even 30 MB/sec in peaks. But a
sustained transfer rate of 20 MB/sec when writing to the AX100 is normal.

As I recall the AX100i is the ISCSI version of the storage array, so I guess
that yoy might hav network problems as a Linux/PE2850 combination should
outperform my setup.

By the way, I use AIT3 drives and get the same speed as your LTO drives, so
maybe it is somewherte in your Linux configuration the problem is ?

Subject: [Networker] Disk backup

Good morning to all,
We recently acquired an DELL/EMC AX100i storage array with 12x 500GB SATA
drives with 2 SPs (storage processors). Each SPs are directly connected to
my Linux server using GB NICs.

First or initial config is 2x 1.3 TB virtual disks on RAID 5, the backup
throughput is only 10 to 15 MB/s. In the hope of improving the backup speed,
I re-created the virtual disks, this time I sacrificed capacity by using
RAID 1/0. Able to create 2x 1.3TB virtual disks using all the 12 disks. The
backup throughput improves a bit if I'm just using/writing on one of the
virtual disk, but if I use them concurrently, the throughput slows down to
10 to 15 MB/s again.

Don't now why, but somehow LTO-2 tape drives throughput (15 to 20 MB/s) is a
lot faster than disks and also when I'm cloning the savesets on the disk to
tapes, the throughput is on average of 5 MB/s to 10 MB/s only. The data is
already on local disk and throughput should be a lot faster, but this is not
case in here.

Environment: Dell PowerEdge 2850 server with 2x 3.8 GHz processor and 4GB
RAM
O/S: Red Hat Linux ES 3 kernel 2.4.21-32.0.1.ELsmp
Networker server: v7.2.2

Any advise, suggestions or explanation is greatly appreciated.
