It's not something that I prefer, but I've done it quite often. I'm not
making changes that way so it's quite "safe". Only my script and it's
output could break. I've certainly never seen any major discrepancies
between nsradmin output and nsr.res, but of course I expect that I could
always run into a situation where the file is being rewritten as I read
it.
Unfortunately, I've once run into a busy machine where the output from
printf "option hidden: on\nprint\n" | nsradmin -i - took over five
minutes to execute because nsrd was so hammered. Reading the nsr.res
file on the same machine was almost instantaneous.

There's big differences, too. Right now my script only handles the
unified nsr.res file, not the distributed ones from 7.x.
