George,
I do not know recall what drives are you using but I would suggest
visiting the IBM site and see what they have to say about the Adaptec
drivers. They provide an older/fixed driver that they recommend using
with their drivers. They also have some additional recommendations
regarding the bus speed and the microcode of the drives.
You can have a start by looking into
