Re: [Bacula-users] Windows client VSS

Hi Kern,
I hope by “ignored if you set it to one minute or less”
you mean a value between 1 and 59 is clipped to 60 seconds?
If it means “60 or less = no heartbeat”, I’ve got to try
to remember what else I changed when I set it to 60 that fixed the problem for me.
But I don’t fully agree with ‘anything less than 5 minutes
is useless’.
Watchguard firewalls have a custom timeout option per policy
(per rule) with a default of only 180 seconds. The device-wide global default is 3600 seconds and the per-rule option is not on by default, but you never know (I’ve had to stop a junior IT tech on the verge of doing stranger things than that ;)
All I know is that I
did have the timeout problem routing traffic through two of those firewalls from one internal network to the other via a shared DMZ, even with all custom timeout options off. But now that I think of it, the switch
used in the DMZ is another brand than those in the internal networks, so maybe I’ve always blamed the firewalls for something that wasn’t their fault.

Hello,
There is something messed up with your job output because it does not show the time. Perhaps you are listing it from the database? In any case, you do not show how you got it and since the time is missing,
I cannot be sure.
The output indicates a classic case of comm line timeout due to switches that do not follow Internet protocols (most switches fall into this problem). Setting the heartbeat interval to anything less than 5 minutes is useless and if I am not mistaken, it is
ignored if you set it to one minute or less. So you should be sure you have heart beat intervals of 300 (this is 300 seconds or 5 minutes) everywhere. There are quite a number of places to set them.
What does not make sense at all is that the job log shows that the job ran only one minutes. If that is correct then the most likely problem is that your VSS is screwed up, or all components of it are not loaded, or you do not have authenticated Microsoft Windows
binaries.
If you read the Windows chapter of the manual, it will give you some other tips for setting up you communications connections.
Best regards,
Kern

Hello,
Josh has a very good point. Ankush you might try downloading the Bacula Enterprise windows client (you must pay a small price -- for a company of your size, please be sure not to run into licensing problems). This newer Bacula Enterprise version (7.0.5 if
I remember right) has many improvements and uses newer libraries so I have been able to implement the code to disable hibernate mode while the FD is running a job. It may resolve your 2003 problems.
However, this code comes with no support other than a minimal amount of help for installation. Also, please note, that if I am not mistaken, Windows 2003 is no longer supported by Microsoft, so you should try to phase out those machines ...

Kern

Still windows backup failing with VSS enable.
Is Windows machine going into sleep/hibernate mode during the VSS snapshot time? Try disabling power management, particularly for the ethernet interfaces. I have seen that with background daemons, such as bacula-fd, Windows can still go into sleep mode even
when the daemon has an open TCP socket. Sleep mode then causes Windows PM to shut off the ethernet PHY, which looks like a disconnect to Bacula. Bacula expects TCP connections to stay up and does not try to reconnect.

ello Ana,
I have put Heartbeat Interval to 1 Minute in DIR,SD and FD config file.
Hello Ankush: just as workaround and for test purposes you can have more than one Include into the same Fileset stanza, you can have one with VSS enabled
and another without. Just put in the disabled VSS Include all the Windows Volumes that you think won't need it. In fact this would make your ideal backup faster and a good option anyway.
Ultimately, if you think you need VSS for all the Windows chunk, you could split your backup job between two FileSets.

Have you tried the heartbeat configuration as Kern suggested? It seems that the storage daemon is waiting too much with vss enabled and loosing connection with fd. You have a very slow transfer rate with vss disabled.
This could be worst with vss enabled and killing connection with sd before data could be transfered.

Some quick thoughts:
1)
It says “Windows Home Server” in the message. There exists no 64 bit version of that, AFAIK.
2)
“wmic OS get OSArchitecture” works on Vista + later only.
The fastest way on all from Windows 2000 onward is [Windows key]+[Break]. The System Properties window that pops up will tell you if it’s 64 bit. If it doesn’t seem to tell you anything about that, it’s 32 (for instance on Server 2003/32 it just says “Microsoft
Windows Server 2003 R2”).
3)
I thought of the heartbeat interval too, until I noticed that the dropped connection was between Director and SD.
I don’t consider it very likely that there’s a router or a firewall between those, and a simple (layer 2) switch shouldn’t cause this problem. A layer 3 switch could, but I wouldn’t expect to find one of those in a network with home server. The switch would
probably cost more than the equipment connected to it.
So basically, I’m jumping into this thread, but I don’t know the one and only 100% correct answer either :(
Yes it is 32 bit window.

Hello Ankush: I'm pretty sure this is the Client Architeture, not OS one. I don't use Windows, but I researched this command do fetch it from the CLI:
wmic OS get OSArchitecture
Anyway, did you try Kern's advise of setting a Heartbeat Interval? This is more likely the solution to your problem.

Are you sure this is a 32-bit Windows OS? If this is a 64-bit OS, then you need to install the 64-bit version of Bacula client instead of the 32-bit version.

This is more likely to be the root cause of this error. You can troubleshoot the connection between this Windows client and your Storage Daemon, or post your bacula-dir Storage stanza here.

Hi Ankush,
In win 2003 the VSS service might be disabled or misconfigured. Please take a look:
To check if everything is working:
vssadmin list writers
This has to provide a listing of writers. If there is no listing and errors in the Event log then:
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940184):
Delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\EventSystem\{26c409cc-ae86-11d1-b616-00805fc79216}\Subscriptions
and Restart:

COM+ System Application
Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider
Volume Shadow Copy
or Restart Windows
If previous step doesn't work then:
Apply MicrosoftFixit50633.msi or manually do:
cd /d %windir%\system32
Net stop vss
Net stop swprv
regsvr32 ole32.dll
regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
vssvc /register
regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll
regsvr32 es.dll
regsvr32 stdprov.dll
regsvr32 vssui.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll

Apply WindowsServer2003.WindowsXP-KB940349-v3-x64-ENU.exe for x64 system
And, possibly, do previous steps after that.
