Quite a number of applications keep checksums within their own file
formats. gzip is one of them, while tar is not. A tgz file is
therefore more secure than a tar file alone.

smartctl and fsck will not always know if bits are written incorrectly
within the data of a file. fsck will only notice if the corruption
has occurred in the filesystem metadata but not in the file content.
