thank you for the comments regarding readlink. Unfortunately, it does
not work :(
if I do:
bash>readlink /dev/vmguests/backup
I get:
../dm-6


Does it work if you add the ' --canonicalize' option?  

readlink --canonicalize /dev/vmguests/backup
