Hello,

We have the following Bacula setup: one remote backup client (file daemon), and one local file daemon, the storage daemon and the director on a backup server. In addition to backups from the remote fd and the local fd, we make a periodical full restore from the remote backup client's data to a USB hard drive locally in the backup server, the remote fd being the backup client and the local fd being the restore client. All the parties involved in the restore job are on the backup server listening locally with the exception of the storage daemon which listens on the public address of the network where the backup server resides. However every time the restore job is run, it fails at an arbitrary file with the following error message:

19-Oct 16:59 zero-dir JobId 3214: Fatal error: bsock.c:415 Packet size too big from "Client: zero-fd:zero:9102. Terminating connection.
19-Oct 16:59 zero-sd JobId 3214: Job RestoreToUsbHd.2009-10-19_16.17.16 marked to be canceled.
19-Oct 16:59 zero-dir JobId 3214: Fatal error: No Job status returned from FD.
19-Oct 16:59 zero-dir JobId 3214: Error: Bacula zero-dir 2.4.2 (26Jul08): 19-Oct-2009 16:59:44
  Build OS:               i486-pc-linux-gnu debian lenny/sid
  JobId:                  3214
  Job:                    RestoreToUsbHd.2009-10-19_16.17.16
  Restore Client:         zero-fd
  Start time:             19-Oct-2009 16:17:33
  End time:               19-Oct-2009 16:59:44
  Files Expected:         1,382,537
  Files Restored:         0
  Bytes Restored:         0
  Rate:                   0.0 KB/s
  FD Errors:              0
  FD termination status:  Error
  SD termination status:  Canceled
  Termination:            *** Restore Error ***

Some files are restored although 0 restored files are reported. We have verified everything we could find from Bacula documentation regarding  the error message and additionally set the heart beat interval for both the local file daemon (zero-fd) and the storage daemon to 60 seconds, but the problem persists. Does anyone have any clues? Here are some environment details:

Remote backup client:
  • OS: CentOS 4.8
  • Bacula-fd: Version 1.38.11
Backup server:
  • OS: Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS
  • Bacula-dir, -sd and -fd: Version 2.4.2
  • Catalog: SQLite 2.8.17
