I was about to suggest a CUDA setup, but they're only really suitable for
massive or embarrassingly parallel setups, not high speed single threading
stuff such as gzip.
On the other hand Bzip and related compression algorithms use 1Gb blocks
and could be parallelised, however that wouldn't suit output to a
streaming device.
