Make certain you've done all the optimizations you can before
undertaking something more severe like this, however. I know my copy of
MySQL was set to use very little system memory and I believe only a
single thread, even though the machine it was running on was 3 CPU with
4GB system RAM. my-huge.cnf is a good place to start, if this machine is
allowed to use a lot of resources for the DB. There are also scripts
that can give you some basic advice about how to tune your DB. I was
able to make plenty of gains through this avenue, as well as having the
proper indexes to begin with.
