I have a FreeBSD 7.0 system with a DELL PowerVault 122 tape/autochanger unit.

# uname -r
7.0-RELEASE-p4

# dmesg | grep sa0:
isa0: <ISA bus> on isab0
sa0: <HP Ultrium 1-SCSI E32K> Removable Sequential Access SCSI-3 device
sa0: 20.000MB/s transfers (10.000MHz, offset 8, 16bit)
(sa0:ahc0:0:5:0): SCB 0xfb - timed out
(sa0:ahc0:0:5:0): Queuing a BDR SCB
(sa0:ahc0:0:5:0): Bus Device Reset Message Sent
(sa0:ahc0:0:5:0): no longer in timeout, status = 200

# dmesg | grep ch0:
ch0: <DELL PV-122T D37r> Removable Changer SCSI-2 device
ch0: 3.300MB/s transfers
ch0: 8 slots, 1 drive, 1 picker, 0 portals

When attempting to pre-label the 8 tapes I received the following error:

-----
Connecting to Storage daemon Storage-tape at backup.utoronto.ca:9103 ...
Sending label command for Volume "Vol-8" Slot 8 ...
3301 Issuing autochanger "loaded? drive 0" command.
3302 Autochanger "loaded? drive 0", result: nothing loaded.
3304 Issuing autochanger "load slot 8, drive 0" command.
3305 Autochanger "load slot 8, drive 0", status is OK.
block.c:999 Read error on fd=9 at file:blk 0:0 on device
"Dell-PV-122T" (/dev/nsa0). ERR=Operation not permitted.
3912 Failed to label Volume: ERR=block.c:999 Read error on fd=9 at
file:blk 0:0 on device "Dell-PV-122T" (/dev/nsa0). ERR=Operation not
permitted.

Label command failed for Volume Vol-8.
Do not forget to mount the drive!!!

After starting and stopping the daemons and trying to re-label tape 8, it seems
indeed to be labeled:

-----
Connecting to Storage daemon Storage-tape at backup.utoronto.ca:9103 ...
Sending label command for Volume "Vol-8" Slot 8 ...
3920 Cannot label Volume because it is already labeled: "Vol-8"
Label command failed for Volume Vol-8.
Do not forget to mount the drive!!!
------

Trying to label a new tape (7) gives an error message but seems to
have succeeded:

-----
Connecting to Storage daemon Storage-tape at backup.utoronto.ca:9103 ...
Sending label command for Volume "Vol-7" Slot 7 ...
3307 Issuing autochanger "unload slot 8, drive 0" command.
3304 Issuing autochanger "load slot 7, drive 0" command.
3305 Autochanger "load slot 7, drive 0", status is OK.
block.c:275 Volume data error at 0:0! Wanted ID: "BB02", got "HP O".
Buffer discarded.
3000 OK label. VolBytes=64512 DVD=0 Volume="Vol-7"
Device="Dell-PV-122T" (/dev/nsa0)
Catalog record for Volume "Vol-7", Slot 7 successfully created.
Requesting to mount Dell-PV-122T-changer ...
3001 Device "Dell-PV-122T" (/dev/nsa0) is mounted with Volume "Vol-7"
-----

Subsequent label operations yield a similar error message, yet appear
successful:

Connecting to Storage daemon Storage-tape at backup.cns.utoronto.ca:9103 ...
Sending label command for Volume "Vol-6" Slot 6 ...
3307 Issuing autochanger "unload slot 7, drive 0" command.
3304 Issuing autochanger "load slot 6, drive 0" command.
3305 Autochanger "load slot 6, drive 0", status is OK.
block.c:999 Read error on fd=4 at file:blk 0:0 on device
"Dell-PV-122T" (/dev/nsa0). ERR=Operation not permitted.
3000 OK label. VolBytes=64512 DVD=0 Volume="Vol-6"
Device="Dell-PV-122T" (/dev/nsa0)
Catalog record for Volume "Vol-6", Slot 6 successfully created.
Requesting to mount Dell-PV-122T-changer ...
3001 Device "Dell-PV-122T" (/dev/nsa0) is mounted with Volume "Vol-6"

Any ideas on the hard/soft errors:

block.c:999 Read error on fd=4 at file:blk 0:0 on device
"Dell-PV-122T" (/dev/nsa0). ERR=Operation not permitted.
block.c:999 Read error on fd=9 at file:blk 0:0 on device
"Dell-PV-122T" (/dev/nsa0). ERR=Operation not permitted.
3912 Failed to label Volume: ERR=block.c:999 Read error on fd=9 at
file:blk 0:0 on device "Dell-PV-122T" (/dev/nsa0).
