Hope it works out. I think this is a good solution for something like
this, though it will not solve your retention problem. You will still
need more than one tape in any case, but not in the drive at one time.

These are kept elsewhere. I believe they can be flushed with a console
command. I believe the physical files are .state files somewhere on the
client end or on the -dir end, depending on what is in them.
