yipee it worked my fd will talk to my dir correctly now thanks a million Kern bacula rocks especially the support thank you thank you thank you

I made ZLIB things work by adding these packages to ubuntu 6.0.6.2 LTS server incase it helps anyone else.

sudo apt-cache search zlib | grep zlib
zlib1g - compression library - runtime
zlib1g-dev - compression library - development
zlib-bin - compression library - sample programs
zlibc - Uncompressing C Library

just an aside my bconsole is spitting out a list of every file being restored is that normal? or is it because i have started bacula-fd like this /sbin/bacula-fd -d 1000

ps sorry thought i was posting to the list my mistake (on backup systems here) thanks again for the help

You'll need to install the development package for zlib. I don't know
ubuntu very well, but it might be called something like zlib-devel.
Then try the ./configure.
