I am setting up my backup like this...
Tapes Labelled Mon - Thursday
Friday1 Friday2 Friday3 Friday4 Friday5 (these get kept till the end of
the month then recycled).
Can i just label each tape then add them to Fridays job pool? Can any
one see this causing any problems??
I'm set up like this, and it works fine as long as you faithfully
change the tapes according to schedule. My volume parameters are
VolUseDuration: 259,200 (3 days)
so that if my operator forgets to insert the tape on Friday s/he
can do it on Monday morning and the backup will still run, in spite
of the Bacula bug which sets the start of the use duration to the
starting time of the job instead of the time the tape was actually
mounted, and
VolRetention: 2,073,600 (24 days)
to make sure the tape can be reused after four weeks (the case of
a month with four Fridays) even if the last backup ran on Monday
morning but the next one runs on time.
Problems occur if a backup is skipped, eg. because of a holiday.
Bacula will recycle the volume even though it hasn't been mounted,
and then insist on that volume on the following Friday instead of
automatically recycling the one you insert. The only way I found
around this is to manually prune each volume after inserting it,
until one month of regular backups has been achieved and the
"Volume Status" and "Last Written" attributes of all volumes are
as they should be.
