[Bacula-users] bacula-sd hangs after tape error
2008-05-14 08:30:39
Hi,
I am using bacula 2.2.8, SuSE linux 10.1 and a Benchmark DLT1 tape
drive. Today, a backup which spans multiple tapes failed because of a
tape error. I could not unmount the tape, and bacula-sd told to the
director: "Device /dev/nst0 is busy in acquire." Which obviously was
wrong, because the tape did nothing any more. I gave up the hope that I
could proceed the backup with a new tape now, stopping bacula in order
to get rid of the stuck bacula-sd process. Now, bacula-sd is a zombie
process and still occupies the tape device.
I think this is a bug. When a tape error occurs (which is quite normal
because tape are mechanical parts and those errors should be handled by
software), bacula-sd should unmount the tape and wait for a new
appendable tape to be mounted. Bacula should then rewind the backup to
the position before the failed tape, so the operator can throw the
failed tape away and replace it by a better one without losing data.
Greetings,
Tobias Barth
