The project is very mature (I've been using for over 12 years), so constant updates aren't really needed.

Either option is fine, depending on whether or not your okay with running an alpha build. Several people are using the 4.0 alpha build and having great success. Setting up the 4.0 alpha seems to be a little more work for some. If your newer to linux, then the 3.3 stable version may be easier to get installed. I'm a linux sysadmin and found installing the 4.0 alpha quite easy. However, there were several things I had to work around that may be harder for someone with less experience.

Hi all,
For a new installation what's advised? backuppc-3.3.1 or the older (and seemingly unmaintained) 4.0.0alpha3 ?
Project doesn't look very active and that's areal shame because I think it has some very strong points.
I plan to produce a dockerized version for use on synology NAS.
Any comment welcome.
