You can *never* back up something with itself.

The last part (pointing to the backup disk) won't
work: BackupPC mangles file names, for one thing. You would
need to do a proper restore in order to use the data.
If you want a copy of your data that is 100% ready
to put into production, you'd use a different tool. Rsync by itself
would work fine (but no versioning), as would things like rdiff-backup
(a kind of BackupPC-style method of versioning but with unmangled files).

His idea is not any easier on the *RESTORE* side.
In either case, you'll have to do a restore.
