There's nothing specific about Backup PC's use of Samba, so you'll get a
broader audience on Samba forums.  Just make sure you reproduce your
symptoms using smbclient.

Windows 2008 has a backup operators group, but (naturally) it's intended
for Windows Server Backup.  I find it useful as the local account which
owns a rsync backup which doesn't suffer from some of the limitations of a
samba backup.  (Open files, symlinks, wonky permissions.)
