You might make a list of clients with a directory list in /etc/backuppc (on the
backuppc server).

Finding out if a backup is made is already done by backuppc itself, so you
should not need to worry about that.

Wondering if anyone has come up with a solution to verify that all network
machines are actually in the backuppc host list?

My approach so far has been to manually add machines to backuppc as I sit
in front of them. I have also on occasion looked at the dhcp server and
added machines from that list manually.

I am hoping I can come up with a script to take a list of machines and
check if they are already in backuppc for backup. I could check that
list every so often and add new machines that make sense.

The list of machines out there could come from a network scan (spiceworks?).

Then I would need to get a list from backuppc of the machines currently set
for backup. Is there a file that contains the list of all the machines?
