I'm surprised there isn't more outright swearing on this list! I spent the whole day on this, sitting down with one working machineside-by-side thenonworking machine, comparing every setting I could think of, digging deep into Windows' innards in search of some enemy flag.

Eventually, I came upon this:https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7577. The bug report specifies that systems with Win7 + Microsoft Live Sign-in Assistant don't play nice with Samba. When I saw the following:
Looking at a Wireshark dump, it turns out that after the two OIDswe have a mechToken [ASN1_CONTEXT(2)] instead of a principal [ASN1_CONTEXT(3)].

... the "Invalid parameter" error suddenly made a lot more sense. I checked out the list of installed software on the nonworking machine and found that Windows Live Essentials 2011 had been installed on 11/23. 11/23?!?! Why was that date so familiar? I logged into BackupPC's web GUI and, yes, 11/23 was the date of the last successful backup of my nonworking machine.

Solving the problem was as easy as uninstalling Windows Live Essentials 2011 and turning off Automatic Updates. I could have tried to apply one of the patches attached to the bug report, but I prefer to keep to the repositories whenever possible.

So there you have it. Thread solved.

I've just compared the Windows build on the problematic machine versus one of the working machines (by checking registry keyHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion), and they are the same.

Arg! What gives?!

Google has not been my friend on this issue. In fact, if you search on my error code today, most of what you'll find is this thread!

Okay, here's an update:

From my BackupPC server, which uses smbclient version 3.4.7, these commands fail:
smbclient \\\\10.10.10.111\\win7home -U username -E -d 3
smbclient \\\\10.10.10.111\\win7home -U backuppc -E -d 3

From another Windows 7 machine, I can connect with these commands:
net use k: \\10.10.10.111\win7home /user:username
net use k: \\10.10.10.111\win7home /user:backuppc

My Ubuntu laptop uses smbclient 3.5.4; I can't connect from there either.

I have other Windows 7 machines in the office that I can connect to, and I was able to connect to 10.10.10.111 until about 3 weeks ago, before I assigned the machine to its user, who evidently screwed something up.

I'm willing to entertain any possibility; please share your ideas!

Have you tried putting the error into Google and seeing what results come
up?
