It's not a common problem anymore, but back in the days when switches
didn't negotiate well people often manually configured server NIC and
managed switch ports to use full duplex - which is fine if you set both
ends. But, if you swap out the switch with one that you expect to
autonegotiate correctly and forget to change the connected server
settings you'll end up with a mismatch (a host configured for full
duplex turns off negotiation, which forces the connected device to
assume half duplex). Not likely now, but still worth checking.
