I too am having problems with backups on Snow Leopard.  I am also  
using tar over ssh, and my error logs look pretty much the same as  
Jonathan's.  At the end it nicely says "No files dumped for share /"  
and shows the backup as failed.  It does, however, backup the new  
files I've added and I can restore them.
