I'm not sure how much it will help, especially if you are using a
recent version of rsync that uses memory more efficiently. The rsync
problem that is usually encountered on this list is when backing up
BackupPC itself due to the unusually large number of hard links. I
would expect HOME directories to have few hard links and that memory
usage would not be limiting.

Of course try it and see... and report back...
