Thanks Dustin!
Turns out that there was a permissions problem with /var/lib/amanda - I had at first installed with the repos for Ubuntu, then uninstalled and used the packages from Zmanda - so just changed the permissions to amandabackup:disk and amcheck runs fine.

What do you see if you telnet to that IP on port 10080?
