One method is to split your DLE into smaller pieces such as subdirectories.
There are some postings in the group archives about how to do this
while stil ensuring that newly created subdirectories will also get
backed up even if you forget to add them as a DLE.
   Otherwise just hope your files are near the beginning, since then
you will have your data restored and can use it long before tar
scans through the entire DLE on tape (looking for other copies of
the same file that won't be there since Amanda doesn't append to tar
archives).
