Full version history backup, a thought.

I was wondering about keeping a full version history of my files and thought if
I place them in a subversion or Git repository then I could back that up and
restore any version I want whenever I need to.
Then I thought maybe if Amanda were to un-tar my backups into a holding space
that was a version control system then tape the version controlled holding space
to tape then I would have a managed backup system and have the advantage of
being able to go back as far as I like to collect a version of a file.
Is this possible, what do you think of short-comings, like are there file types
that do not lend themselves well to "only differences" versioning, what
versioning systems are best and store the smallest data amount for the
differences etc.
