I just wondered if there are some other amanda users who backup their MS based servers lik Exchange, SQL and etc. with amanda?
We are, both Exchange 2003, and SQL Server 2000.
Are there any specific problems using amanda with Windows Servers? Are they happy with their performance and the effectiveness of the Amanda software with their windows servers? Are there any direct built-in software support for such servers (like SQL)?
There isn't builtin support. What we've done is throw some cheap SATA disks in RAID-0 into our backup server, share that space via SAMBA to the Windows servers, and then have them do regular dumps to the SAMBA share. The AMANDA box then just backs up the databases from the local disk. This works really well for us.
Simply i would love hear feedbacks of Amanda users who backup their Windows servers using amanda and guide me during our decision for our backup plan.
Well, you can't beat the price of Amanda (or the excellent support from this mailing list, for that matter!), and it does a lot of things with scheduling that commercial software just can't do, IMO. It's just a little trickier backing up certain Windows applications, but the procedure we're using works well for us.
