* bad tapes?
* dirty heads?
* scsi terminator problems?
* scsi cable problems?
* any messages in the system log files?
* amanda commands are not the only ones that can use the drive,
do you have problems using dd, tar, cpio, dump, cat, to write
and read to the tape?
