I would define that in disklist instead of the current / replace it with /dev/hda3 for instance?

The /dev/root device has permissions brw-------
But I am not sure if I should be changing this.
I don't remember having to before.

Anyone know what I should do to fix this?

I don't even have a /dev/root on an FC2 box here. This sounds like a disk label to me, and disk labels have always been a bit iffy IMO. What happens if you give it the real hardware address, something on the order of /dev/hdaX, where X is the partition number?
