More than likely. You should be using amcheck to debug, not amdump.
amcheck would catch this. What user and group did you compile amanda with
on the client, and what does 'ls -l /dev/hda2' say?

I get no errors with amcheck. The client responds correctly.
I compile with user= amanda with group=backup
ls -l /dev/hda2:
brw-rw----    1 root     disk       3,   2 Nov 30  2000 /dev/hda2
