That depends on your definition of huge. Last night, my big config took
under an hour to estimate 250GB worth of data to backup.

Have you seen this? Amanda needs to do estimates, period.

You can specify the backup program in the config files -- it doesn't need
to be at compile time. Also, as I've said, look in the archives for
people running scripts to backup databases.

Have your script check the inputs to see if it's being pointed at the
database. If it is, dump the database to be backed up. If not, just run
the backup program.
