Andrew, thanks for your thoughts.
I think the 'overdue 12158 days' is caused by Amanda thinking this is a new
disk. Instead of referring to the disk as sda8, I broke to down by it's mount
points. This caused it too look like a new disk, that's never been backed up
before. I'm changing that now. I think it's been 12158 days since the 'epoch.'
There's no firewall between the client and server. In fact, the client and
backup tapeserver are one and the same in this problem.

getting in a little late on this thread...

This seems to indicate that it didn't receive any estimates from those
disks, which leads it to conclude that the disk is offline. (Are those
`overdue 12158 days' normal for a new disk?)
Just to check the evident, have you checked firewall issues? Estimates
timeout?
