amcheck fails when client has multiple IP addresses

Subject: amcheck fails when client has multiple IP addresses

I added a second IP address / interface (eth0:1) to a client machine - now 
amcheck fails with this message:

   selfcheck request timed out.  Host down?

If I shut down eth0:1 amcheck works.

How can I get it to work with eth0:1 enabled?
