I started the "old" tapetype program already. Is amtapetype more
accurate?
 
Thanks for your detailed description. I used the device
 /dev/nrmt0
so I think this should be without hardware compression (Linux). 
I'll add the results to the FAQ-O-MATIC as soon as I got the results.
