I've started using the file: device and having got over the hurdle of
actually getting it configured (this really needs documentation, and yes, if
it's not being done, I will take a look at it myself when I'm a bit mor
familiar with the whole thing) I've now tried to use it and got a rather
strange report. I'm attaching the whole report below - sorry that this makes
this message rather long.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These dumps were to tape TIZdaily01.
The next tape Amanda expects to use is: a new tape.

sce600 -port/home 0 FAILED -------------------------------------------------

(brought to you by Amanda version 2.4.3b4)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All these systems are currently being backed up in another Amanda
configuration where I don't get these problems (I do get other problems, but
that's for another time). So, what's happening here ?

> moca / lev 0 FAILED [input: can't open:: No such file or directory]

What does that mean ?

> sce600 /export/home lev 0 FAILED [can't switch to incremental dump]
> ifms1 / lev 0 FAILED [can't switch to incremental dump]
> ifmsdev3 / lev 0 FAILED [can't switch to incremental dump]
> moca /nfshome lev 0 FAILED [can't switch to incremental dump]
> moca /makalu lev 0 FAILED [can't switch to incremental dump]

AFAIR this message appears when planner sees a new partition but hasn't got
enough capacity available to do a level 0 in this run. However, it can't
use less tape by doing an incremental dump because it hasn't got a level 0
as a baseline. But there's loads ot 'tape' available. I have

tapetype FILE

which is

define tapetype FILE {
   comment "Amanda file driver"
   length 120000 mbytes
   filemark 0 kbytes
   speed 1075 kps
}

Now what may be relevant here, purely because it seems more than
coincidental, is that every failing filesystem (both the "input: can't
open::" error and "can't switch to incremental") is greater than 2GB in
size. A quick grep through the source code for 2g doesn't reveal anything
interesting. There is a mention in the NEWS about a change in 2.3.0 alpha of

Backup files larger than 2 GB now supported. The current limit is
2^31 Kbytes (2 terabytes), which should hold us for a few more years

There's a couple more mentions of 2 GB but nothing apparently relevant.

The backup servers I use are all current Linux boxes so they have 2 GB
filesize limit and on the old configuration, I regularly have files much
larger than 2 GB in the holding disks.

As mentioned, server is Linux (SuSE 8 - kernel 2.4.18) with amanda 2.4.3b4.
Clients are mostly SuSE 8 also without a couple of Solaris boxes.

Can anyone help me here please ?

Kindest regards,

Niall O Broin
