I was experiencing the exact same issue last week.

Try this on for size:
/usr/sbin/amrecover -C daily -s  backup.rnd.caribbeanblue.com -t
backup.rnd.caribbeanblue.com -d /dev/yourtapedevice

I'm curious to see if you get the "no index found" errors that I got, which
means you need to go into amanda.conf and add "index yes".
