Hello all,

I would like to make you aware of an issue that has been found with VMware
ESXi 6.0, Patch Release ESXi600-201605001 (build 3825889), also known as
"Express Patch 6". Note that the following information is subject to change
at the discretion of IBM, as more information becomes available.

After applying this ESXi patch, the VMware API function that returns CBT
(Changed Block Tracking) data can return incorrect data, leading to
inconsistent backups. The problem occurs when ALL of the following
conditions are true:

* You install VMware ESXi 6.0 Express Patch 6 (build 3825889).

* Backup relies on CBT, as is the case with Data Protection for VMware's
incremental forever backup.

* You back up VM guests that run Microsoft Windows 2008 or later Windows
operating systems. Other operating systems are not affected by this issue.

The problem becomes observable when the amount of data backed up becomes
much larger than expected, perhaps coupled with longer elapsed backup run
times.

Because the integrity of the CBT data cannot be guaranteed, perform the
following steps if you have installed VMware ESXi 6.0 Express Patch 6
(build 3825889):

1. Roll back your ESXi 6 hosts to VMware ESXi 6.0.0 U2.

2. Reset Changed Block Tracking (CBT) for all guests running Windows 2008
and later versions of Windows ("affected guests"). Instructions for
resetting CBT can be found at https://kb.vmware.com/kb/2139574

3. Perform a full incremental forever backup of all affected guests. This
is required to ensure backup consistency.

4. After the full backups have finished, resume normal incremental forever
backup operations.

VMware is aware of this issue but a fix is not yet available. The VMware KB
for this issue can be found at:

https://kb.vmware.com/kb/2145895

IBM APAR IT15803 is our vehicle for documenting this issue, but the fix
will need to come from VMware.

Best regards,

Andy
