To a first approximation, this doesn't seem to be the problem -
I can see the "extensive" memory usage even with a backup
restricted to file systems which do not contain symlinks at all.
(The whole system's symlink structure is somewhat challenging
to verify.)
OTOH, do you have evidence that "dsmc" (meanwhile upgraded to 6.6.2.1,
without a noticable diffence in behaviour) still might contain such
"weird" bugs? After all, TSM "backup" ought not follow symlinks at all.
Though I do remember that in olden times, circular links and stuff
would lead to "dsmc" aborting ... (no outright errors here, with
the client under consideration).
