I was going to go that route, but unfortunately RHEL4 isn't officially
supported with the v6 clients.

Ithink there is a mistake in version. If you mention 6.2.1.0, try to install
6.2.1.1. There are some bugs related to memory allocation which are fixed in
6.2.1.1. At least, client 6.2.1.1 helped to fix my problems with memory
allocation.

Dumb question, but have you examined the client to see if there are any
circular links?

(For example a link low in the tree that points higher in the tree.)

To a first approximation, this doesn't seem to be the problem -
I can see the "extensive" memory usage even with a backup
restricted to file systems which do not contain symlinks at all.
(The whole system's symlink structure is somewhat challenging
to verify.)

OTOH, do you have evidence that "dsmc" (meanwhile upgraded to 6.6.2.1,
without a noticable diffence in behaviour) still might contain such
"weird" bugs? After all, TSM "backup" ought not follow symlinks at all.
Though I do remember that in olden times, circular links and stuff
would lead to "dsmc" aborting ... (no outright errors here, with
the client under consideration).
